Cherokee Reunion

An historic event is occuring this week in Red Clay, Tennessee near Chattanooga, TN. For the first time in 25 years, descendants of many Cherokee people that were forcibly removed from the Chattanooga and North Georgia area, are coming together for a very special event. The event will be held in Red Clay, TN starting Thursday April 16,2009. At this event the two Cherokee nations, East and West will come together for a reunion. The event is being held in Red Clay as this was the last eastern capital of the Cherokee Nation. The schedule in Red Clay is as follows:
Thursday 4/16/2009 Cultural Festival- dance,singers and storytellers. Speakers Symposium, council tour, members golf outing.
A reception in Chattanooga Friday 4/17/2009
The runners deliver the flame, opening ceremony, Joint Council Session.
Special Screening of the Trail of Tears episode of a PBS series on American Indians Saturday 4/18/2009
Cultural Festival continues with dance, storytelling, games and art. 1984, marks the last time the two nations met, so this is a very historical event. |
